WATERBEETLES ESTONIA

Location at (Kooraste, Kanepi community, 26º37' E.L., 57º58' N.B.) [Maurijn

Endla is a large Nature Reserve in South East of Estonia. It has Large oligotrofic lake 
and small sphagnumbogs. The forests contain a lot of horseflies and mosquitoes. Trees can only grow in this area on sand areas.
Aeshna juncea, Common Darter, Torf Mosaikjungfer   was seen in Eastern Estonia, near Kanepi and  surroundings of Tartu
This was a big and well known moor cente, I will never forget it because there were a lot of mosquitoes. Not in the open land, because it was to windy.
Due to the cold and especially the wind we also saw not a lot of dragonflies but we did see Aeshna subartica (Noordelijke glazenmaker) 
The only place I (Andre Hospers) have seen Leucorrhinia albifrons was in this Nature Reserve Endla.
Endla is a large Nature Reserve in South East of Estonia. It has Large oligotrofic lake 
and small sphagnumbogs. The forests contain a lot of horseflies and mosquitoes. Trees can only grow in this area on sand areas.
Endla has a Large oligotrofic lake and small sphagnumbogs. In this area Moerasrozemarijn, Dwergberken (Betula nana) were present. These two species were also present in Nigula. 
An other characteristic is the growing of Pine trees in the marshes an highlands. Pine trees are the only trees who survive the wintertime in this area
Aeshna serrata, Nordische Mosaikjungfer, Vassmosaikslanda  was seen on several places but always near the coast.
At Tartu charophytes were rare. Only Chara globularis was collected on one location :-(
Odalatsi Alikad contains a spring with very very cold water, Schwertia, Vuurjuffer which was very late and Skunkweed

Tartu campingsite with very deep water. The water was created by two rivers streaming colliding. One groose and one beaver was seen. 
Only Chara globularis was present in the area near Kooraste and Kanepi and very rare.

The ponds hardly contained any water but still lots of characeae!. In this area (Vilsandi Park, Medrina Pautsaare laht) lots of Chara aspera was present

Small forest pond on sandy soil in depression in birch / coniferous wood. Deep only 30 cm. Much humus, brown water.

2 Densely vegetated canalised brook near Lokuoja (Kooraste, Kanepi community, 26º37'30" E.L., 57º58'30" N.B.) [Maurijn van der Zee, David Tempelman, Andre Nattepoot] 6 July 1999

Broad: 2 m, depth: 0.5 m. Vegetation: Equisetum fluviatile (holpijp), Scirpus sylvaticus (bosbies), Glycera maxima (liesgras).

3 Forest pond/ditch, north of bog area Meenikunno Raaba between Vinso and Nohipalu [David Tempelman, Andre Nattepoot] 7 July 1999

Size of the pond: circa 5 x 10 m. Vegetation: Nuphar lutea (gele plomp), Caltha palustris (dotterbloem), Urticularia major (groot blaasjeskruid).

Kamarus Järv (a smallish bog lake in the east of Meenikunno Raaba): vegetation around the lake consisted of Scheuchzeria palustris, Drosera longifolia (langbladige zonnedauw), Drosera rotundifolia (rondbladig zonnedauw), Eriophorum vaginatum (éénarig wollegras), Andromeda polifolia (lavendelheide), Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (berendruif) and Sphagnum spec. (veenmos).

In the largest lake in Meenikunno Raaba very few aquatic macrofytes at sampling site were found.

5 Brook just west of Kanepi 26º45' E.L., 57º59'20" N.B. [David Tempelman, Andre Nattepoot] 7 July 1999

This brook more or less has the character of a lowland brook. Broad 5-10 m. Deep 1 m. Slow current. Clear water. Vegetation: Nuphar lutea (gele plomp), Ranunculus lingua (Grote boterbloem), Menyanthes trifoliata (waterdrieblad), Equisetum fluviatile (holpijp), and (waterscheerling).

7 Brook east of Kooraste, north of Jõgehara, Kanepi community, 26º41' E.L.,57º57'50" N.B [Maurijn van der Zee (7 July 1999), David Tempelman, Andre Nattepoot (8 July 1999)]

Just west of the sampling site, the brook is dammed and so there is a pond, of about 0.5 – 1 hectare in size. The pond has very clear water, and is vegetated with lots of Nuphar lutea (gele plomp), Nympha alba (witte waterlelie), Acorus calamus (kalmoes), Lemna trisulca (puntkroos), and Potamogeton lucens (glanzig fonteinkruid) .

From the pond, the brook originates some 3 m below the surface of the pond. The brook also contains very clear water, and has a coarse sandy bottom with humus, stones and wood. Few vegetation, only some Lemna trisulca (puntkroos).

Very small, 50 cm broad, 10 cm deep. No aquatic macrofytes. Emanates from a forest nearby. At sampling site no trees. Lots of Filipendula ulmaria (moerasspirea).

Little water, but very clear and much humus. Completely vegetated with Carex and Juncus.

Lake with clear water, maximum depth c. 7 m. Shores with reed Phragmites australis (riet). Lots of Nuphar lutea (gele plomp), Nympha alba (witte waterlelie), Potamogeton lucidus (glanzig fonteinkruid), Potamogeton perfoliatus (doorgroeid fonteinkruid), Ranunculus circinatus (stijve waterranonkel), Myriophyllum spicatum (aarvederkruid), Ceratophyllum demersum (gedoornd hoornblad) and Chara globularis (een kranswier-soort).

Brook: shallow, very clear water, stony. Galigaan (check foto), Juniperus, lepelblad, Mentha aquatica, Epipactis palustris, Scirpus lacustris. Lake full with Chara major. Tormentil, waterdrieblad, Urticularia major, Ceratophyllum emersum.
